Nintendo NX is a TV-supporting handheld with detachable controllers and cartridges

The Nintendo NX hasn’t had very much information about it released officially, though plenty has come through leaks of various patents for various devices that would appear to be accessories for the console.

At home you can connect the portable (which houses the power as a standalone device) to a base station that displays the system on the TV.

You can read the full Eurogamer report, here.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display.

NX will be powered by Nvidia’s Tegra mobile processor.

Eurogamer also reports that NX will use cartridges as its game media format, which will supplement downloads.

In addition, Digital Foundry also wonders whether the NX will be capable of running Nintendo NX games. Back in May, eagle-eyed fans spotted The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s trademark included cartridge-based games. Another big tidbit? It’ll apparently use cartridges, which Nintendo is recommending at roughly 32GB in size – a digital-only system was considered, but ultimately rejected.

With this new hardware, a number of changes are reportedly coming to the console in the form of a new OS, which will unfortunately prevent backwards compatibility.

Another source said the system would run on a new operating system from Nintendo. Graphical comparisons with current consoles are hard due to the vastly different nature of the device – but once again we’ve heard Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity.

Chalk this up as another rumor on top of the pile of other NX rumors, but this one seems to have credence from Eurogamer, who generally has some top-notch sources. But we’ll still have to see what Nintendo manages in terms of battery life, and how the docked mode works in terms of providing an equally compelling experience whether at home or on-the-go.
