And the numbers are even more impressive when you consider that the app is available only in Japan.

We’re happy to deliver the first video in our “Nintendo News Weekly” series, where you can catch up on the important news highlights that surfaced during the week.

For using the Nintendo Account and regularly playing Miitomo will net players Platinum Points. If you are desperate to play Miitomo now, there are ways to trick the App Store into thinking you’re not in the UK.

We don’t know all of the details about Nintendo’s first game yet, but Nintendo has said that Miitomo will require players to first create their own Mii avatar, which can then be given topics and questions that it’ll be able to use to communicate with other Miis created by your friends. I wouldn’t bet on it becoming the next big thing, but it’s going to be a neat way for Nintendo fans to engage with the company and each other – and it might just be another notable source of revenue, too. Nintendo competitors, Sony and Microsoft, already have both paid and free smartphone apps available for all smartphone operating systems.

Multiple sites have compared it another Nintendo IP, the 3DS game “Tomodachi Life”, except that Miitomo puts greater focus on communicating with other Miis. While everyone had hoped that the company’s first app would be a game, Nintendo has released a messaging app instead.

For those unfamiliar with Miitomo, it is basically a social game which some have likened to Nintendo creating their very own social network. Your Mii will then ask you questions (like usual with Mii games, these are usually fun party game questions, like what you’d wish for if you had one wish), then share those answers with your Mii friends.

The game offers in-app purchases, where players can part with real cash to buy in-game currency. However, a vast majority of the monetization within mobile apps is said to be exploit users, and has led to stiff criticism of this business model.

Miitomo also ties into My Nintendo, which also launched today in Japan and replaces the old Club Nintendo rewards program.
