Nintendo’s first mobile app, Miitomo is a huge success

For those curious to see what they’ll be getting themselves into when the app formally launches in your country, you can download/install the Japanese version to play around with in the meantime. The app is built around creating your own little Mii character (a virtual avatar you build to look, sound, and even have the same personality as you) then making friends. The Miitomo app, as it turns out, allows you to create and personalize Miis, as well as connect with your friends through the app, on Twitter or through Facebook. Or, if you already have a Mii you like on your Nintendo console (or 3DS), you can scan its QR code to replicate it within Miitomo. Our goal is to make these weekly videos fun and enjoyable for you. But in case you thought the news was all “meh, ” Nintendo Life had nothing but positives to say about Miitomo.

Once you start the game, it asks questions as a way to get to know the user, such as “where did you go last weekend?” or “what’s your favorite food?” Miitomo is more like a social network than a game, with its features focused on sharing, including your personal avatar that interacts with your friends as you create dialogs and share photos with each other. You earn the coins for the shop by answering the app’s questions and by logging in each day.

The game offers in-app purchases, where players can part with real cash to buy in-game currency.

In addition to the social aspect, Miitomo includes a mini game called Miitomo Drop. There’s a pachinko-like game where you can send your Mii tumbling through the board to try to luck into the outfit or accessory you want. This places it above social messaging app LINE, which has a huge presence in the region.

You can also pose with your Mii using the app’s Miifoto feature. Unfortunately, Nintendo spokesperson Yasuhiro Minagawa would not reveal specific download figures for Miitomo.
