Update 3 Feb: Nintendo has confirmed that fans will be able to pre-register for Miitomo by creating a Nintendo Account using their Nintendo Network ID, social Network accounts or email address starting on 17 February. Finally, Nintendo explained Miitomo works differently in different languages, so they will study how different regions respond to Miitomo before expanding it. Eager fans can register for Miitomo accounts as early as this February 17.

It’ll also have a feature for taking and sharing photos with users’ Miis, so it’s essentially a social network including/for your Mii, if that’s something you might be into. When the service launches, it’ll feature a points program that rewards players in different ways.
That much we knew. This program was certainly lacking in many other departments though, especially in the U.S., but luckily the more expansive My Nintendo is coming soon.
Nintendo is expanding into the mobile market with Miitomo this year, and the House of Mario has offered up some more details about how and when players can access it. Kimishima has told investors that “We would like to set “100 million My Nintendo members globally” as our initial milestone”. Users will receive special discounts in their birthday months, and even some just for registering. Since Nintendo’s presentation was in Japanese, the exact nature of how points are accrued and what they’re used for is not clear for now.
Nintendo, which has its North American headquarters in Redmond, Wash., is also launching a My Nintendo rewards program. Lose your 3DS or your Wii U breaks down, and you’re out of luck if you want to re-download games to replacement hardware.

What’s Miitomo? It’s not crystal clear yet, but it looks like a mashup of a Mii avatar, chat app and Nintendo’s handheld StreetPass tech, which lets nearby 3DS systems exchange data.
