The Switch is a home console with a tablet at the center.
Nintendo will address these issues, I think, by positioning the Switch as the clear improvement over previous generations of Nintendo hardware in each product market. I had a blast. What Nintendo is promoting for the Switch’s service is more like a free one-month rental. I already don’t have enough time to play every game I want to on my PS4, and the presence of an iPhone, iPad and the aforementioned dust-gathering Vita in my life meant I was loath to pick up a second portable console. I expected to find the controllers too small; each is about one-third the width of a smartphone. It’s a really accurate sort of rumble unlike anything I’ve felt before. As you move each hand, the controllers measure the intensity, curve and position of your punches. I’m in that very same boat.
All roads led to Tokyo as Nintendo finally made the official unveil of its newest and highly anticipated hybrid game console, the Nintendo Switch. That sounds like bad company retreat ice-breaker.
On a technical level, the Switch is an exciting piece of hardware, and our afternoon playing with it has left us wanting more.
Overall, the Nintendo Switch feels like a great improvement on the Wii U in nearly every way.
The Switch fills the “party machine” role a PC often can’t handle.
For families and kids, this is promising.
“So if you’ve got memories of Wii Sports boxing, which was just flailing around and hoping you win, it’s a far cry from that”. Paid users will also get access to a monthly game as part of their subscription fee. The Xbox One only came with a Kinect sensor at launch, boosting the price by $100, supposedly. Or you could opt for a cheap tablet, for something simple that lets you play on-the-go.
There’s also a bit more out there on the specs. According to Nintendo’s own numbers, the company has sold just 13.4 million Wii U consoles around the world.
Playing with the JoyCons held separately feels a lot like playing on a Wiimote and Nunchuk, as I mentioned earlier. And Nintendo will apparently close the year with Super Mario Odyssey in “holiday 2017”, which Ars’ Kyle Orland has written up here. This is going to be the ideal way to play most games: In fact, Zelda will tell you by way of a message on the bottom screen that it recommends you play with both JoyCons attached to the Grip controller.

The Switch managed to convince me it would be neither of those. Nintendo stock now at -4.56% here in Tokyo. There’s also a massive back catalog of classic titles that Nintendo has no reservations tapping into through its “virtual console” store. A free app gives you even more choices and a handy way to manage your Nintendo Switch parental controls from anywhere via your mobile device. It’s also just a lot of fun to play with. No details are available on pricing yet but this now makes Nintendo join Sony and Microsoft with charging for online gaming.
