Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the US Open quarterfinals when his opponent, Austria’s Dominic Thiem, was forced to retire with an injury during their fourth-round match on Monday.

Third seed Wawrinka, victor of the 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open, overpowered the 63rd-ranked Marchenko, who reached the fourth round when 14th-seeded Nick Kyrgios retired with a hip injury while trailing two sets to one.

Thiem called for the trainer after struggling through the latter part of the first set and the early stages of the second.

Should del Potro make the semi-finals he would be the lowest-ranked man to do so at a Grand Slam since 237th-ranked Vladimir Voltchkov at Wimbledon in 2000.

He will face the victor of the match between third seed Stan Wawrinka and Illya Marchenko in the last eight.

He will face No. 3-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.

“Sometimes bother me a bit, but I can deal with that”.

Granted a wild card after collecting a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, del Potro, maintained that his wrist felt fine, and whe will face No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka next.

Thiem said his knee started hurting three days earlier, possible after he changed the way he walked because of foot blisters. With a ranking of No. 142, he is the lowest-ranked quarterfinalist here since Jimmy Connors (No. 174) ripped through to the semifinals 25 years ago at the age of 39.

Thiem, who turned 23 on Saturday, has reached the French Open semi-finals and cracked the top 10 in his breakthrough year.

Del Potro recently claimed silver at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and has continued his form in NY, booking his place in the quarter-finals after fourth-round opponent Dominic Thiem retired hurt on Monday.

Wawrinka blew a lead and smashed a racket, but he eventually pulled out a four-set victory to reach a fourth straight US Open quarterfinal.

The popular Argentine is proving that, into the quarters despite playing just 10-plus sets. “And I really enjoy to play in this stadium it’s fantastic for me”.

Del Potro got a huge break Monday when he spent only 72 minutes on court. For once, an injury was aiding del Potro, not hindering him.

He rallied to win that set, but Thiem then took a medical timeout when he endured a right knee injury in the second set.

The 27-year-old who shocked the world in 2009 beating Rafael Nadal and then Roger Federer to win the US Open, has been out of the title hunt in NY after four wrist surgeries until now.

“I played extremely well”.

“I don’t know if I’m playing better than 2009, but I keep winning and that’s import”, del Potro said.

A day after the last American man standing, Jack Sock, was eliminated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, del Potro enjoyed massive crowd support and may well be the crowd favorite for the duration of the tournament.

Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori spiked the big guns of 37-year-old Ivo Karlovic to book his last-eight spot.

He said that he considered Wawrinka the favourite in their rematch, but that “anything can happen in this event for me”.
