Nissan to recall Altimas for third time to fix hood latches

DETROIT ” Nissan is recalling almost 930,000 Altima midsize cars worldwide – some for a third time – to fix a latch problem that could let the hood fly open while the cars are moving.

In the meantime, Nissan is recommending that owners of these cars make sure the hood is fully closed and latched. This extra latch is meant to keep the hood shut if the primary latch is not working. In March 2015, the recall widened to include 625,000 Altimas from 2013, 2014, and 2015.

The automaker says that in two previous recalls, dealers adjusted latches and applied lubricant.

U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that the hoods unexpectedly opened while driving.

The company initially suggested the components were prone to malfunction if paint flakes off and allows the metal to rust, eventually causing the secondary latch to become stuck in the open position.

This marks the third time since 2014 that Nissan has had to recall its Altimas to fix faulty hood latches.

Now, Nissan has instructed to dealers to replace the latch entirely, to make sure there is no issue again. Owners can contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. The recall is expected to begin the week of February 15.
