Nittany Lions, Hackenberg best SDSU

Penn State’s recipe for success Saturday involved the unlikely mixture of a slumping quarterback, an overlooked receiver and yes, a fat-guy touchdown. Penn State gave up three touchdowns in that game, as many as it allowed in the first three games last season, but haven’t allowed one since.

It will be written that Penn State overcame adversity in Saturday’s win against San Diego State, pulling out a victory despite an onslaught of injuries that put second and third stringers into the game at running back and safety. Thankfully for Penn State, one of Lynch’s fill-ins, Mark Allen, quickly reeled in his first career reception for a go-ahead touchdown.

It’s been a while since the Nittany Lions have had a star in their frontcourt. The Lions’ special teams mistake is the only reason San Diego State is on the board after one quarter. Under the lights, and in a crucial early-season league showdown, Barkley stepped up in a big way, picking up 195 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns; he averaged more than 9.0 yards per carry and simply was too much for the Scarlet Knights to handle.

Nobody would have blamed Zettel if he had stayed home with his family or had simply taken time to be with his thoughts. Starting with great protection, way more things have to go right for a sophisticated passing game to work in college.

Redshirt junior Malik Golden, who typically plays in Penn State’s nickel formation, got the nod in Lucas’ spot.

Worth mentioning that: Former Nittany Lion Matt Millen will serve as the Big Ten Network’s analyst for the game.

The senior from West Branch, Michigan, recorded a team-high 7 tackles, including 2 1/2 for losses, and was also credited with a 1/2 sack, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in Penn State’s win.
