NJ high school quarterback dies after getting tackled during game; tributes

Evan Murray, a senior quarterback at Warren Hills Regional High School in Warren County, New Jersey, died Friday night after suffering an in-game injury.

“It’s a tragedy and our heartfelt condolences to the family and the whole Warren Hills community”, NJSIAA spokesman Michael Cherenson said on behalf of the statewide athletics association in reaction to Murray’s passing.

“He tried giving a thumbs-up to the rest of the team, and all of us cheered”, said Kaitlin Bell, 16, a junior varsity cheerleader at Warren Hills High School. Bowen says the school will offer grief counseling at the school after 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Dubiel called him “a fine kid” and other tributes are pouring in from those who knew him.

An online fundraiser was created Saturday morning in support of Murray’s family.
