Atlantic City police Chief Henry White said the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after officers stopped a auto with three men near a parking garage of Caesars casino.
Police say the second officer fired back, striking one of the suspects.
The shooting happened after the two officers, who were in a marked patrol vehicle, stopped on Arkansas Avenue, between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, after spotting a group of males on the street “who were involved in some sort of criminal activity”, Fair said.
The cop is reportedly in a critical condition undergoing surgery, while police continue to hunt two suspects.
Five others took off in different directions and remain on the run as an Atlantic City police officer remains in critical condition at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center.
The Atlantic City Police Department confirmed that it’s investigating a shooting.
Ruberton said the 5 persons of interest sought by law enforcement have been located and identified. The dead suspect is identified as 25-year-old Jerome Damon of Camden, New Jersey.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian told reporters: “It’s a sad commentary on society”.
Two Cumberland County men were arrested later Saturday and charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder on police officers and a slew of other robbery charges. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the two suspects, the Atlantic City police would like to hear from you. The initial reason for the stop is now unknown.
A $20,000 reward is now being offered for information in the police shooting outside casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
