NM native Neil Patrick Harris hosts new NBC show

One TV’s writer’s Twitter timeline while Best Time Ever aired was a cringe-inducing stream of snark slamming the scattershot enthusiasm of the show’s potpourri of indulgent silliness-#BleakTimeEver was one choice hashtag-while another critic posited a scenario in which Harris wakes up naked at the end, covered in tattoos Blindspot-style in the #MostNBCCrossPromotionEver. Honestly- the segment just made me fall in love with Blake Shelton and Pharrell a bit more.

But a lot of things in the episode were about NPH when they probably needed to be about other people.

That wasn’t all Williams got out of Harris! So when it was announced he would be starring in his own variety hour this fall, there was little doubt he’d be able to pull it off. That being said, there were also expectations. Only when he gave the pair a tropical honeymoon did they seem to accept that this particular nightmare was over, but you can bet that they’ll be double-checking their luggage and birth control when they get to Antigua. The lucky few only found out what was happening when their faces appeared on TV to perform karaoke with singer Gloria Gaynor with the prize of $1,000 on the line. “That’s us and our happy reaction to them”. Neil Patrick Harris and Woody Harrleson sing that song from Frozen while jousting on pedestals over a pit of synchronized swimmers.

“I’m very excited for the show to happen”, Harris says. Maybe Neil Patrick Harris can be the successor to Corso when he retires? “How’s it feel? It’s nearly like you’ve won already”, came across as more earnest than intended.

“Best Time Ever” has been described as a variety show, but the reality was more comedy-game-prank show, with segments that felt like outtakes from Fallon or Kimmel, or possibly from Harris’ failed Oscars gig.

“It’s so romantic, I love antiquing”, she said.
