Kentuckys shortest player led the Wildcats past their biggest rival.
When Louisville visits Kentucky in Rupp Arena on Saturday, it will mark the ninth time that Rick Pitino and John Calipari have matched wits as the coaching antagonists in our state’s signature basketball rivalry. Louisville star Damion Lee, who stands 6-6, opened the possession being guarded by 5-9 Tyler Ulis. Kentucky (10-2) led by 16 points early in the second half before Louisville came nearly all the way back. The first half, we gave up a lot of baskets, a lot of offensive rebounds, a lot of 3s, Lee said. “It’s just another game and we’re just looking to win”. Shark’s going to get his leg. You watch.’ The enthusiasm that we need for each other – enthusiasm matters, fight matters. Louisville got two more chances but a turnover and missed three at the buzzer preserved the Wildcat win. His first two 3s kept Kentucky close when Louisville surged to a five-point lead late in the first half, and his last came with just 2:47 to go in the game and the Wildcats clinging to a 70-68 lead.
Hawkins is the first Kentucky native to score in double figures for the Wildcats against Louisville since Darius Miller did so in the 2012 Final Four.
Eighth-ranked Arizona added a No. 1 scorer in Boston College transfer Ryan Anderson, No. 9 Butler’s offense is at its best when high-scoring guard Kellen Dunham is hot and No. 13 Miami’s seniors have already led the Hurricanes on an impressive three-game romp through last month’s Puerto Rico Tipoff. He earned playing time when freshman Isaiah Briscoe turned an ankle during pregame warmups and was unable to go.
“Louisville is a good team”, Calipari said.
Hawkins was three-for-four from 3-point range, and all three of those shots were huge. “And I laughed and said, ‘Next man up”. I was just really confident.
A Kentucky team that coughed up a nine-point lead in the first half as well as most of a 16-point lead in the second half made all the essential plays in the final 5:34 after a three-point shot by Lee pulled the Cardinals within 65-64. Lee’s rushed 3-pointer ended as an air ball, and Kentucky celebrated a 75-73 victory.
Pitino didn’t meet with reporters after the game, with assistant Ralph Willard taking his place. With the Wildcats not being as dominant as they were last season, it was a golden opportunity for Rick Pitino and his team to finally end the misery and come away with the win.
Video surfaced on the Internet of Pitino gesturing to the crowd as he walked up the runway to the locker room after the game. “I really believe having Christmas off for these guys was great”, Calipari said.
Kentucky is now 8-1 against Louisville, including a ideal 4-0 at home, since head coach John Calipari took over.
Pitino had a 6-2 record against the Cardinals while coaching the Wildcats.

Outside of a trip to No. 1 Michigan State, Louisville’s schedule so far this season hasn’t been too tough of a test. The Cardinals have easily handled their business against several out-matched opponents.
