No. 20 LSU seeks better QB play vs Mississippi St

Miles: “I can’t imagine Danny Etling will not take the first snap”.

Miles has yet to officially anoint Etling the starter for Week 3, but strongly implied that the junior quarterback will get the nod. Etling flourished early on, leading touchdown drives on his first few series, but his passing production was non-existent in the second half, when the Tigers needed their running game to pad their lead. At this point, he’s the best option Miles has. “I don’t know that that will happen”, he said. “So they want to run the football”.

Danny Etling, LSU QB: The Purdue transfer debuted with the Tigers last week. Though he wasn’t head and shoulders better than Harris, he was serviceable enough to warrant a start under center for the Tigers. If the Bulldogs can rebound and win this weekend and then find a way to get to Tuscaloosa on November 12th with just the one loss and a ranking only somewhere in the teens, then you know the players would feel as disrespected as ever.

BEHIND THE LINE: Mississippi State’s defense has 22 tackles for a loss already this season, which ranks first in the SEC and third nationally.

The uniforms will form the centerpiece of LSU’s annual Gold Game festivities on September 17. Miles said LSU coaches are aware of Fournette’s tender ankle.

“We’re going to kind of keep that in-house if you don’t mind”, Miles said of the decision at quarterback.

Etling sat out last season via NCAA rules.

That was Jacksonville State, though.

“I didn’t expect him to come on and understand it as quickly as he has, but you do recognize how hard he works and his natural abilities”, Miles said.

“We’re going to watch and let things unfold, but I would guess Danny would take the first snaps”, he said.

How was he able to grasp the system so quickly? They have such great wide receivers out there on the edge and such big-time playmakers. It’s just what he does.

Against Jacksonville State, Etling completed 6-of-14 passes for 100 yards, one touchdown and one interception – he also added a rushing touchdown.

“He’s faster than Dak and a little bit more explosive than Dak with the ball in his hands”, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said.

“We’ve got to get pressure on them”, Mullen said. “As the leader, I have to set that standard, and I’ll set that standard really high to make sure we play with that same level, sense of urgency, and desperate intensity we need to win a game”.
