No. 22 Butler tops Owls

The early-season theme for the University of Minnesota has been a propensity for giving up leads. “We just kept working at it and (assistant coach Terry Johnson), he’s got the plays for us to be in the right positions”. We lost to a veteran team. But despite missing 15 of his 20 shots, Dunham found other ways to contribute.

It wasn’t just the second-half turnovers that led to the disappointing loss in Puerto Rico. The Utes held the Red Raiders to 39.1 percent shooting and Miami has made 51.4 percent from the field overall this season.TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNUABOUT MIAMI (3-0): Sophomore Ja’Quan Newton has given the Hurricanes solid production in the first three games, capped by a 15-point effort against Mississippi State, making 13-of-22 shots on the season. Forward Andrew Chrabascz and reserve forward Kelan Martin each scored 18 points as the Bulldogs clobbered Missouri State 93-59 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan.

Lewis scored 12 of his 16 points in the closing 9 minutes. We got stops and they shot 35 percent, which is really good defense.

At this point in time Arizona may not have the decisive answers at a few positions that are generally demanded in college basketball, but they do have a lot of options. “We had all of our bigs in foul trouble, which is hard”. The next question is whether he’ll be physically able to play three games in four days.

BALL STATE 74, WESTERN KENTUCKY 60: In Muncie, Nathalie Fontaine had 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (1-1). Rotnei Clarke led the Bulldogs with 24 points and nine assists.

Before arriving in Puerto Rico, Pitino’s team was tested in a 67-56 victory over Louisiana-Monroe at Williams Arena.

Unlike UNC, the freshmen had little impact in this game.

Temple took advantage of Minnesota’s turnovers during a critical stretch in the second half Thursday. It is unlikely that King will continue to be that hot from deep, but it is a potential bright spot for the Gophers moving forward. The Owls, coming off a 26-11 season in which they reached the NIT semifinals, are projected to finish in the middle of the American Athletic Conference. So did freshman Jordan Murphy, another post presence offensively.

“Perhaps we weren’t executing like we needed to”, Coleman said.

“The kids are down … but we’ve got to keep rolling up our sleeves and working”, USF coach Orlando Antigua said. “Teams are going to watch that and say they’re not good against the zone”. He made 11 of 12 free throws.

In addition to Temple being better than the two other teams Butler has faced this season, part of the reason the Bulldogs couldn’t score at will against the Owls was that Temple slowed the pace of the game way down.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever even heard of that many points off of turnovers being scored before”, coach Larry Krystkowiak said afterward.

“After the long sit-out year”, Lewis said, “it’s a lot of fun and just playing the game of basketball is a lot of fun”.
