No. 23 Florida rolls; QB Del Rio injured

Purdue transfer Austin Appleby is more of a pocket passer, and while his numbers from previous years aren’t exactly inspiring (19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions through 16 games) either, there’s no way to know how he’ll respond when pressed into duty.

A reporter on Wednesday asked McElwain whether Del Rio would play Saturday, and the Florida head coach chuckled and then replied, “You’re lovely”.

Nonetheless, coach Jim McElwain insisted the game plan won’t change without Luke Del Rio, who injured his left knee in a 32-0 victory against North Texas on Saturday night and likely won’t play against the Volunteers. Trainers rushed to the field as Del Rio ripped off his helmet.

Here’s the hit in slow motion …

“I want to be a part of something special”, said Appleby, who completed 2 of 4 passes for 30 yards in relief of Del Rio on Saturday.

Callaway led the SEC with 201 yards on 13 catches with two touchdowns in the Gators’ first two games.

UNT came up with two fourth-down stops in the first half, continuing a seasonlong trend. Kirkland will miss a second straight game due to a high ankle sprain. I’d just appreciate that we kept to the Gators and go on from there.

Florida now faces the meat of its schedule, a seven-game stretch of SEC games, including road games against the Tennessee Volunteers (this weekend), Vanderbilt Commodores, Georgia Bulldogs, and Arkansas Razorbacks. “I know how much it means to him from that piece”. “When you’re playing against a team like that, they’ll expose you if you don’t execute”. “It lets us know that we have him and he has us and we will always have his back”. They also were both ranked in 2012.

“We’ve got to put points on the board when we’re down there in the red area”, McElwain said. So that room, you know, and you hear me talk about that, the room itself is the same. “We’ve got to punch the ball into the end zone”.

“We still have to do a good job on our cutoffs and things like that to puncture the defense a little better”. Former backup quarterback, now thrust into the starting role, Austin Appleby called the hit “dirty.” It might make some of you feel old, but Appleby said he had a No. 15 Gators jersey as a kid.

“When you see something like that, it’s my responsibility when their parents aren’t here to be their parents”, McElwain said.
