Ells said that the E. coli outbreak has forced the company to review how its ingredients are being handled.
“The remaining tests are expected to be returned by tomorrow, but the clear expectation is that the illness on campus is limited to the norovirus”, the college announced today.
Practically all documented cases relating students who were feeling ill at Boston College told Boston College Health Services that they ate at Chipotle Mexican Grill during the weekend.
Norovirus can spread from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces.
“It’s a really tough time, ” Ells said.
At a presentation Tuesday for analysts in New York City, Chipotle executives noted the exposure period for the E. coli cases appears to be over.
Regarding the E. coli outbreak, Ells said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has still not found an exact source for the bacteria, which can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting.
“When we reopen, the restaurant will be completely sanitized and every single employee will have been tested”, he said. Chipotle closed the restaurant voluntarily and says the company is committed to becoming an industry leader for food safety.
“All of the evidence we have points in that direction”, said Chris Arnold, a Chipotle spokesman.
Company shares, which have been pummeled since the outbreak, rebounded sharply after Ells’ interview, jumping 5 percent to close Thursday at $575.43.
“This was a very unfortunate incident and I’m deeply sorry that this happened”, he said, “but the procedures we’re putting in place today are so above industry norms that we are going to be the safest place to eat”.

The norovirus is just the latest food scare for Chipotle on the heels of an E. coli outbreak that reportedly sickened at least 52 people in nine states last month, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
