No help from DC? Florida to spend millions on Zika fight

The Department of Health recommends that pregnant women reconsider travel to Zika-affected areas and be aware if their partner has traveled to affected areas since the virus is sexually transmitted.

The researchers found a particular uptick in Women on Web abortion requests in countries that issued health advisories about Zika, but also legally restrict abortions.

Dr. Mary DiOrio, Ohio Department of Health’s medical director, says that travelers who go to countries where the Zika virus is widespread must do safety measures to avoid mosquito bites. OH has a total of 16 confirmed Zika cases.

They added that accurate data on women’s choice are tough to obtain, but their data provide a window on how worries about Zika virus infection may have affected pregnant women in Latin America.

After the House of Representatives finally passed a Zika funding bill on Thursday-for $1.1 billion (less than the $1.9 billion President Obama originally requested), much of it taken away from Affordable Care Act funding, and remaining Ebola emergency money. Health officials suspect that women who contract Zika later in pregnancy are less likely to pass it on to the fetus, but research is ongoing. While a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention map depicting the estimated range of the Asian tiger mosquito shows it skirting Wisconsin’s southern borders, it is quite rare in more northerly locations, and has been found only a very few times in isolated spots of southern Minnesota and northern IL. “If you’re a woman who’s pregnant, who gets infected, particularly in the first trimester, it’s overwhelmingly catastrophic”.

The federal government has only allocated $153,844 for epidemiology and lab support, $500,000 for seven counties for mosquito control and $40,856 in lab supplies and personnel. The virus is believed to cause about 390 million infections a year, and about half of the world’s population is at risk of dengue, according to the World Health Organization.

One prediction Fauci seemed pretty confident in was that Zika is going to be hard on Puerto Rico. A group of health experts recently called for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to be postponed or cancelled due to the Zika threat but the WHO (World Health Organization) rejected the proposal. “It’s entirely possible, for example, that women in these countries might still have been anxious about the possibility of Zika even though no active transmission had yet been confirmed”.
