Scanlan’s son Toamalama, a junior at Buchanan, left his father’s bedside to attend. A vigil was planned Sunday evening at Buchanan. The tragic event pushed a group of high school girls to do something special for Scanlan’s three kids who attend their school. Saturday, Fresno Christian coach Russ Counts posted a letter addressed to the school’s community asking for prayers.

The injured officers – who both have at least 10 years of experience – were dragged out of the lobby as Vang was held at gunpoint.

Sheriff-Coroner Margaret Mims, speaking to reporters, said she was proud of how the officers responded amid Saturday’s bloodshed.

“It is a very emotional issue, because this is a family”.

He said Scanlan family members from places like Las Vegas, San Francisco, Utah and Hawaii have arrived in Fresno.

Sunday morning, workers were still cleaning up inside the lobby at the downtown Fresno jail. They were each listed in critical condition Sunday at Community Regional Medical Center, said sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti.

A law enforcement officer patrols a street after reports of an active shooter in the main lobby of the Fresno County Jail in downtown Fresno, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016. COs who pass the test may carry a gun, Botti said.

Officers attempting to subdue Vang used a stun gun to no effect before firing shots at him, Mims said.

“It really touched my heart to see all these people here to pray for my family”, Toamalama said.

Vang tried to go to the front of the line but was told to go to the back.

He then began to display weird behavior by pacing back and forth next to a metal detector that leads to a secure area of the jail, the statement reads.

Davila and Scanlan approached Vang and asked him to take a seat. When confronted by sheriff’s deputies and a Fresno police officer, Vang dropped his weapon and told authorities he wanted to be arrested, Botti said.

Officials said Thong Vang opened fire while waiting to visit someone at the Fresno County Jail.

No other details were immediately available. The case reportedly involved the Mongolian Boys Society sex-slave ring at a local Motel 6, and there were 16 defendant’s when it began. The original case had 16 defendants.

A lieutenant and Vang exchanged gunfire, but neither was hit. His initial charges were six counts of rape in concert with others, six counts of forcible rape, and one count of false imprisonment.
