No Indictment in Sandra Bland Jail Death
But Special Prosecutor Darrell Jordan refutes that the family has been kept out of the loop. In the days after Bland died, county authorities released video from the jail to dispel rumors and conspiracy theories that she was dead before she arrived at the jail or was killed while in custody.

Bland’s family and supporters have questioned the official suicide ruling, noting that she was about to start a new career.
The Vermont senator issued a brief statement Monday night after a Texas grand jury declined to indict any of the sheriff’s officials or jailers for their treatment of Bland, who was black.
Melissa Hamilton, visiting criminal law scholar at the University of Houston, said Bland had no legal right to remain in her vehicle after the trooper ordered her out. “Based on the Sandy that I knew, that’s unfathomable to me”, said Bland’s sister, Sharon Cooper.
Kirsten West Savali, a senior writer at The Root, agreed with Mr Sander’s by saying that the Texas grand jury did not value Ms Bland’s life. “We are trying to get this case done as soon as possible”. Authorities said it was suicide, but Bland’s family insist that could not have been the case.
“I’m begging to meet with them”, he said by phone Tuesday.
“We’re all upset. We’re upset, and we’re disappointed, and that’s what we feel collectively as a family. Early morning, midnight, please call me”.
“We have asked before to speak with them, and will ask again”, he said.
The grand jury heard evidence in the Bland case for more than eight hours Monday. “But how should they feel confident in what these people are telling them when it’s easy to look at the evidence and investigate and come to a conclusion?”
The stop quickly escalated into an argument over Bland’s cigarette that ended with Encinia pulling Bland out of the vehicle and arresting her-yet that flies in the face of a recent Supreme Court ruling that states that routine traffic stops can’t be extended unless there’s evidence that the driver has committed another crime, or there’s a safety issue in play. She was pulled over near Prairie View A&M for failing to signal during a lane change. Bland was arrested and charged with assaulting an officer, a felony.
The video, which does not have sound, shows Bland being brought into the jail. A federal judge has set a 2017 trial date for a wrongful death suit filed by the family of Sandra Bland.
Bland was taken to a county jail in Hempstead, a small town north-west of Houston. Officer Encinia was placed on administrative duty immediately after the video was released showing that he did not use proper protocol. The Waller County Sheriff’s Office said the 28-year-old woman died “from what appears to be self-inflicted asphyxiation”, as NBC News originally reported.
