No indictment in Sandra Bland’s jailhouse death
An attorney representing Ms Bland’s family, Cannon Lambert, said on Monday that the grand jury’s decision was consistent with what the family believed was an attempt by authorities to cover up the events surrounding Ms Bland’s death.

A federal judge set the January 2017 trial date earlier this week. It appeared Bland had hanged herself with a plastic garbage bag accessible in her cell. Demonstrators showed support on the one year anniversary on the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen who was shot and killed in Ferguson, Missouri by a white police officer, Darren Wilson, throwing America’s troubled race relations into harsh relief.
In the months leading up to her death, Bland posted several videos about racial tensions and her personal struggle on Facebook. While her death was ruled a suicide, the entire nature of the situation-the seemingly excessive force used during the stop, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her untimely death-raised suspicions and criticisms. In Texas, her death also led to a statewide inquiry into the problem of suicide in county jails and how to solve the problem. Police dashboard footage released amid a roiling national debate over the treatment of black people by law enforcement, showed Bland arguing with state trooper Brian Encinia.
Activists meet ahead of a rally demanding justice for Sandra Bland on July 28, 2015. “We know that nothing could replace losing a loved one, but we will continue to show the family support over the next year as the legal process continues to play out on their pursuit towards justice”.
He unsuccessfully tries to pull her out and tells her “I will light you up”.
Reed-Veal said prosecutors have not sought to interview Bland’s relatives about her death last summer.
Houston attorney Darrell Jordan, who is one of the independent prosecutors appointed to handle the grand jury investigation, told the Chron that the grand jury has not yet decided whether to indict Encinia.
After her arrest, she went through intake and was booked into Waller County jail. Encinia was placed on desk duty after the DPS said he violated traffic stop procedures and the department’s courtesy policy.
Breitbart Texas previously reported that Trooper Encinia stopped Bland after she ran a stop sign in front of him and then changed lanes without signaling as his vehicle approached hers. “Their lawyer spoke to the press yesterday and called the grand jury a ‘sham of a proceeding.’ So we’re really going to have to see what happens going forward”.

Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal filed a federal lawsuit against the arresting officer and others connected to the case, according to local news reports.
