No Indictments In Sandra Bland Death, Rules Texas Grand Jury
Bland was found dead in her cell of Texas jail three days after her arrest last summer, with a plastic bag.

Bland’s family and Black Lives Matter activists rallied around what they see as the senseless imprisonment and subsequent death of the young woman, who had just moved to Texas to work at Prairie View A&M University.
A grand jury in Waller County, Texas ruled on Monday night that no officers should be indicted in connection with the death of Sandra Bland, KTRK-TV reported.
(CNN) – A grand jury has decided not to indict anyone in the case of Sandra Bland, whose death in police custody raised questions of excessive force and the role of race.
Texas Department of Public Safety/REUTERS Darrell Jordan, one of the special prosecutors in Bland’s case, said they will likely still pursue charges against the arresting officer, Texas State Trooper Brian Encinia. She claims in court documents that all defendants played a role in denying Bland her constitutional rights, which ultimately led to her death.
In a statement released on Twitter, Sanders wrote that “There’s no doubt in my mind that she, like too many African-Americans who die in police custody, would be alive today if she were a white woman”.
Encinia has been on administrative leave since Bland’s death.
The stop escalated into a verbal altercation after Encinia asked Bland to put out a cigarette and she refused.
Bland’s family has criticized the grand jury process and what they say is a lack of information sharing by authorities. The grand jury will return in January to consider that issue. The grand jury met for eight hours on Monday. On the third day she was found dead in her cell.
Family still maintains that they don’t believe Bland’s death was a suicide.
And while the biggest tragedy in this case is that Bland was arrested at all, had jail employees been more curious about the discrepancies in her intake papers – the contradictory nature of her answers about her mental health – jailers might have kept a more careful watch over the 28-year-old.
Sandra Bland was arrested on charges of changing lanes improperly.
“There’s nothing in there that shows anything happened but she killed herself”, Mathis had said.
Bland was taken handcuffed to the county jail in Hempstead, where she remained when she was unable to raise $500 for bail.

“The timing of the grand jury, in my personal opinion, is disrespectful to the family and it continues to pour salt on a wound that has already been ripped open for the past five months”, she said.
