No Indictments In Sandra Bland Death, Texas Grand Jury Rules
About two dozen people gathered outside of a Texas courthouse Tuesday to protest a grand jury’s refusal to indict any sheriff’s officials or jailers in the death of a Sandra Bland.

But prosecutor Darrell Jorden said the grand jury reached no decision on whether the trooper who arrested Sandra Bland, 28, should face charges.
Although grand jurors decided late Monday that Waller County sheriff’s officials and jailers didn’t break the law in their treatment of Bland, they are scheduled to return in January to consider whether to indict Trooper Brian Encinia, who arrested the Chicago-area woman on July 10.
Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw has said Encinia violated internal policies of professionalism and courtesy during the traffic stop, which he made because Bland had made an improper lane change. The stop escalated into a confrontation that ended with Bland being forced to the ground and arrested for assaulting a public servant.
Bland’s family sued Waller County for negligence in her death, but county attorneys said jail officials weren’t responsible.
Three days later, unable to raise about $500 bail, she was discovered dead in her cell.
Bland’s apparent suicide pushed the issue into the national spotlight and prompted both houses of the Texas legislature to demand additional reviews. Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis, who appointed five special prosecutors to handle the Bland case, has said there is nothing in that investigation “that shows anything happened but she killed herself”.
“We would like very much to know what in the heck they’re doing, who they’re targeting and if it has anything to do with Sandy and her circumstances”, Mr. Lambert said.
Bland’s family says they have no faith in a grand jury that’s considering criminal indictments in her death in a Texas jail last summer. They also have questioned a medical examiner’s determination that Bland committed suicide in her cell by hanging herself with a plastic garbage bag.
While Texas grand juries typically decide on felony charges, Jordan wouldn’t rule out misdemeanor charges related to the case.
“It’s like starting from square one in dealing with the opposing counsel”, said Bland’s sister Sharon Cooper.
Houston Chronicle reporter Sinjin Smith has been reporting on Bland’s case. The family criticized the grand jury proceedings in Waller County, Texas.

“These pieces of injustice are getting swept under the table”, she said. According to the lawsuit, guards at the jail did not check on Bland frequently enough, and failed to act when Bland refused meals. “She should never have been ordered to leave her auto in the first place and never have been arrested”.
