No Injuries From Magnitude-6.8 Earthquake In Alaska

Aftereffects of the magnitude 7.1 natural disaster that rattled Southcentral Alaska early Sunday morning are still being felt on the Kenai Peninsula. The upgrade back to 7.1M comes amid reports of a home explosion and fire. Seismologist Michael West, however, said that the recent incident is the strongest quake that hit Alaska’s south-central area in decades.

Alaska Gov. Bill Walker says he’s relieved there wasn’t more damage given the severity of Sunday’s magnitude 7.1 quake. But flames started coming under a wall, and the officer backed off to let firefighters finish the work, Sandahl said.

About 30 homes total were evacuated in the Kenai neighborhood. Fortunately, all the firefighters were out of the area so there were no fatalities or injuries reported due to this incident. The hashtag #akquake trended early Sunday on Twitter as people shared their experiences and posted photos of items that had fallen off walls and shelves.

The good news is that there is no danger of a tsunami caused by the quake, the National Weather Service announced after reviewing all available data.
