No large increase forecast for Thanksgiving travel

Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, and Santa Barbara and California’s Central Coast are the top five destinations for Southern California’s travelers.

About 3.03 million Southern Californians will travel by vehicle – a 0.7 percent increase over 2014, according to an Auto Club statement.

More Southern Californians will be hitting the freeways and airports this Thanksgiving holiday, although the increase over past year will be negligible, the Automobile Club of Southern California predicted Thursday. Statewide, 4.9 million will drive to holiday destinations, and 616,000 will go by plane.

Pack a few patience if you plan to travel away from home this Thanksgiving airports and roads could be crowded.

The biggest single travel day of the holiday period for Lambert is projected to be November 29, which is the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Helping buoy holiday travel are dropping gasoline prices, which are about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than they were at this time a year ago.

AAA says SFO will be the seventh busiest airport in nation for the next week and a half with just a little less than 1.5 million passengers. An estimated 197,000 travelers are expected at the airport November 25, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
