No longer franchise QB, Bradford to ‘deal with’ new reality

Trading Bradford would likely send an extra draft pick the Eagles’ way, which the team could definitely use more of. On the surface, it appears management gave away the franchise to move up to No. 2 in the 2016 NFL Draft and looked like one of the league’s worst all-time trades, especially not knowing just who the pick will be. Rumors vary from reporter to reporter, but either Jared Goff from Cal and Carson Wentz from North Dakota State will be the QB to lead the Rams back to Los Angeles.

@nwagoner: This is a really good question and one we don’t really have an answer for at this point.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ trade to move up in next week’s NFL Draft apparently has lit a fire under Sam Bradford’s behind. And it very well might be impossible for any team to overvalue the quarterback position.

This off-season, the Eagles resigned quarterback Sam Bradford to a two-year, $36 million deal, with $22 million guaranteed, and signed former Chiefs backup Chase Daniel to a three-year, $21 million deal.

On the other hand, Bradford is set to count $12.5 million against the salary cap in 2016, so the Eagles would save $1.5 million in cap space.

“If it happens, it’s something I’ll deal with when it happens”, Bradford said. Instead of the Eagles receiving a 2017 fourth round pick, it shows Philadelphia getting a conditional fifth round pick in 2017. When asked which flavor he preferred, Roseman said he liked both.

“We’re very sure we’re going to get the player we want”, Roseman said before adding that the Eagles are “very comfortable” with either.

“I took a lot of abuse a month or two ago for saying Wentz and Goff were every bit in the conversation with last year’s (top quarterbacks) Mariota and Winston”, Mayock said during a Friday media teleconference. “We gave up some assets, but they believe the value is there, so here we are”.

But Bradford’s trade demand could complicate that, forcing the Eagles to either forge ahead with an unhappy quarterback or take a lesser return just weeks after locking him down at $18 million a season.

But while Kelly was unable to make the rumored swap for Tennessee’s first-rounder to get Mariota, Pederson and the Eagles’ brain trust did.

This marks only the second time in the past four decades that the top two overall picks have been traded in the same year.
