After allegations that an infant died in the demolition, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday that no shanties will be razed unless its inhabitants are first rehoused. “We will raise the issue in parliament”.
A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vibhu Bakhru further said this is a “pathetic act” as “peoples’ lives are involved and we can not be so casual”.
The court also issued notice to the railways, police and the city government and asked them to make a co-ordinated action plan for the rehabilitation of the displaced residents.
The demolition was conducted by the Railways with the help of the police on Saturday, with Union minister Suresh Prabhu telling the Lok Sabha on Monday that that the encroachments were a safety hazard that have been impeding development.
The Delhi government was also asked by the court to “coordinate with the authorities and provide every possible support they can to people who have been put to risk of life in this winter”. Defending Gandhi for his comments, Dixit said, “Rahul ji has his heart with these poor people”.
Meanwhile, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi visited the razed Shakur Basti where the Indian Railways had conducted a demolition drive, uprooting around 500 jhuggis and promised the homeless slum dwellers that they would be provided aid at the earliest. “Rahul Gandhi continues to be a toddler”.
Gandhi’s feedback drew a pointy response from Kejriwal.
Kejriwal promptly hit back, saying Gandhi was a “kid” who did not know that the railways which carried out the razing was controlled by the central, not Delhi, government.
“It was decided that there will be no demolition anywhere without rehabilitation in the coming days”, Kejriwal said after meeting Prabhu. “Tears being shed by Rahul reflect political opportunism”, said BJP Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay.
Severely crucial of Railways and the police, the AAP authorities has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the demolition drive and dying of the woman.

North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta visited the location close to railway line at Shakur Basti and directed civic well being officers to right away present aid to affected individuals. “As per his orders, a mobile dispensary was immediately stationed at the site along with doctors and para-medical staff. He (Gupta) also got blankets distributed to the needy”, a senior NDMC official said.
