No one can protest or call bandhs against court orders

Puducherry, Sep 16 (ANI): Puducherry continued to witness shutdown in connection to the Cauvery water row.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit said, “The people can not become a law unto themselves and, therefore, it is obligatory on the part of the authorities of both states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, to prevent such actions”.

It warned that when there is court order, there should not be any violent agitations and any party aggrieved has the liberty to take legal recourse for mitigation of their grievances.

A 24-year-old man set himself on fire at a rally held by Nam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) here for “retrieving Tamil Nadu’s rights in Cauvery”, and to condemn attacks on the Tamils in Karnataka. “The bandh in Tamil Nadu has to be peaceful”, Patil said.

Firebrand MDMK leader Vaiko was also detained at Thiruchi railway station. The apex court also insisted that the state authorities take immediate preventive action.

Also on Friday, the Madras High Court dismissed a PIL seeking measures to protect Tamils in Karnataka and Kerala, reported ANI.

Vignesh was part of a protest march, where almost 500 cadres of the Naam Tamilar party took part from Pudupet to Egmore in Chennai on Thursday, a day ahead of the Tamil Nadu bandh, to condemn the violence targeting Tamils in Karnataka and to seek a long-term solution for the Cauvery dispute. In every sense, this is extremely worrying the Karnataka government as areas of loss include public transportation, industrial production, shopping malls, restaurants, cinema halls, educational institutions and mainly corporate sector.

Cadres of some political parties trying to stop trains in some places were taken into custody by the police.

Jayalalithaa assured Siddaramaiah that safety of people from Karnataka would be ensured in Tamil Nadu.

She recalled that the 2007 final award of the Cauvery disputes tribunal was published in a Central gazette in 2013 after a Supreme Court order, and blamed the Centre for not constituting the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
