Liverpool put their recent miserable form behind them on Saturday with a 1-0 victory against league leaders Leicester City, to once again restore faith in the club’s direction under Jurgen Klopp. Craig Brough Liverpool’s Adam Lallana in action with Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante. With the onus being on Liverpool to attack, this match in theory should be another one that suits Leicester down to the ground thanks to their famed counter-attacking style.
Liverpool’s Emre Can vies for the ball with Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez during their Premier League match on Saturday.
Today’s match also saw Leicester fail to score in a game for the first time this season.
Liverpool downed leaders Leicester courtesy of Christian Benteke’s lone goal.
It has been something of a crusade for Klopp in his first months in charge at Liverpool to boost the input of his side’s supporters, and the German will be pleased to have heard Anfield in full voice throughout this win. Now we can continue but I want to see my players enjoy it. I don’t know why we were so nervous at the beginning. Why?
What they do have is a clever manager who is learning the rhythms of the Premier League and, with no European distractions midweek, has the time to work with his players. “Liverpool deserved to win but we only started to play when we fell behind and I don’t know why”.
The visitors’ approach would not have surprised Klopp but that did not simplify the task confronting Liverpool. Klopp’s decision to favour the younger of his Belgians looked justified in the early stages, as Origi harassed Morgan and Robert Huth, twice outpacing the centre-halves before shooting powerfully, most significantly when provoking Schmeichel into a 25th minute save.
In a bright opening period, Liverpool went closest after just three minutes when Philippe Coutinho’s curling effort from 25 yards just drifted wide of Kasper Schmeichel’s far post. But the Belgium dribbled directly into trouble and it finished 1-0.
Looking like the better team from the outset, Jürgen Klopp’s men may have been ahead sooner had Divock Origi not gone off injured, but his replacement Benteke clinched all the three points with a goal himself, despite missing some good chances either side of his opener.
The first time Leicester’s defence lost concentration amid the Liverpool pressure, they were punished ruthlessly.
One of the best performers for Leicester City today.

The home side then had a chance to win it late on when Eden Hazard was brought down in the area, but Oscar’s penalty sailed over the bar. “That the final image of this game was so awkward demonstrated how much improvement is still needed”.
