The two MLAs had alleged that they were made to resign forcefully and had challenged the notification issued by speaker Nabam Rebia.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a freeze on the holding of proceedings of the politically embattled Arunachal Pradesh Assembly till January 18, 2016.

“The single judge bench of Justice B K Sarma dismissed the interim order passed in Nabam Rebia’s favour on December 17 previous year”, Thongdok’s counsel, S S Dey, told Express.

In a notification on December 9, Governor J P Rajkhowa had preponed the Assembly session to December 16, 2015, from January 14, 2016. “Avoid the stalemate till the high court decides”, the bench said.

“We are satisfied, that it would be just and appropriate, if proceedings of the Assembly are not held from now onwards till January 18”.

The court has also asked for a copy of the order to be placed before the governor. The decks for the downfall of the Congress government appeared cleared when the Guahati High court earlier in the day vacated its earlier order, keeping the state Assembly in abeyance, thereby giving a forward-movement to the BJP bid to prop up a government headed by Congress rebel leader Kalikho Pul. The 14 MLAs have got temporary stay till 19th of this month.

The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday dismissed the writ petition filed by Gabriel D Wangsu and Wanglam Sawin challenging their disqualification as MLAs in Arunachal Legislative Assembly. The Supreme Court is slated to deal with the case in detail first thing on Thursday morning with political players in a state of heightened suspense.
