No tsunami threat to Hawaii from natural disaster off Japan

A magnitude 6.5 quake struck off the southern coast of Japan, early Saturday morning local time and shortly before 4 p.m. EST on Friday, the U.S. Geologic Survey said.

While the world was watching events unfold in Paris – where coordinated explosions and shootings are expected to have left at least 50 people dead – a major quake hit off the coast of Japan.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been reported.

“Based on quake information and historic tsunami records, the natural disaster was not sufficient to generate a tsunami”, the warning center said in a statement.

In October, the Japanese government restarted its second nuclear reactor in Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, despite opposition from anti-nuclear protesters.

Tsunami warnings stretch along the country’s southwest, including the Tanegashima Yakushima region, which experienced a small tsunami in 2011.

Anti-nuclear activists are anxious about accidents that could occur in the event of an quake that could disrupt nuclear operations in Kagoshima.
