Santa Bill says he’s also training his own children to one day take the reins. “The jets then make sure he’s safe and once he moves on to the USA, the Armed Forces send their fighter jets to continue the mission”.

For the 61st year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, better known as NORAd, will be tracking Santa Claus himself on Christmas Eve.

Also on Thursday, Santa will make time for pets.

The app also allows you to get in touch with NORAD by phone, so if you prefer to make a call to double check Santa’s progress you can do that too.

Mayor Les Stapleton said they receive a couple hundred letters to forward on to Santa Claus every year. Lying about the existence of Father Christmas often falls into this category, used as a tool to teach pro-social behaviour (helping and sharing) through the promise of presents if the children are good.

Previous year stat-wise, Chouinard confirmed, NORAD Tracks Santa had over 140,000 calls during the 23 hours the op centre was in operation, also the op centre received and answered over 2,800 e-mails and the official website had 22 million unique visits and the website is available in eight languages.

The NORAD Tracks Santa website, www.noradsanta.org, launched on December 1.

Today, NORAD tracks Santa’s yuletide journey via its website, www.noradsanta.org.

Whatever you call him – Santa Claus, Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas – the big, jolly man with the red suit brings joy to anyone he encounters. In fact, once he came to the realization that the pile of presents and Santa letters he’d gotten each year (not to mention the tooth fairy dollars and Easter baskets) really came from mom and dad, he thanked us for doing all of that for him.

Starting Christmas Eve morning, website visitors can watch Santa prepare for his flight. Caty Weaver was the editor.
