Normal Barbie is Now Prepared to Get Her Period

In a move to educate young girls about menstruation, a company responsible for the Lammily Doll, which alleges to be the only “real” Barbie-type doll with average body proportions, is marketing what they call a “period party package”. Now, just like a real-life 19-year-old, Lammily will get her period with the Period Party, a $10 dollar Lammily doll accessory pack-available starting today. Besides colourful pads, the kit also comes with an educational pamphlet, a pair of panties for the doll and a calendar with dot stickers to track periods. “If a doll has pads, how can [menstruation] be taboo?”

Lamm told Time that menstruation is still a taboo topic. “Parents are also wary of approaching this subject”, Lamm said. By offering pads for Lammily, girls would realize menstruation is normal and give parents a way to explain it “in a fun way so it is not so serious and scary”, says Lamm. In response, he created the Lammily doll, a toy figure much more attuned to what a woman actually looks like based on data from a CDC study.

With this doll’s new “Period Party” kit, Lamm is hoping to inspire the women of the future to understand and embrace their bodies’ natural processes from an early age.

Lammily made her debut past year complete with a sticker pack that featured pimples, moles, cellulite and scars that can be put on the doll.

The important thing is for parents to talk to their young daughters about menstruation before it happens, says Gilboa. “You’ll get eggs in your belly, just like Easter”, raps the mother in the video, while the father grimaces like a serial killer.

“Some moms have told me that it would have lifted a huge burden at the time that they were kids”, said Lamm.
