North Atlantic Treaty Organisation says six foreign soldiers killed in attack near Kabul
The second battle for Sangin comes days after a Taliban suicide bomber killed six North Atlantic Treaty Organisation soldiers in Kabul in the most deadly attack on coalition forces since August. During the fighting, a mistaken USA airstrike on a hospital there, which killed numerous patients and staff, added to a sense of chaos and poor coordination between Afghan troops and their US military backers trying to drive out the Islamist fighters.

The Times reported that the latest deployment included at least one SAS unit of around 30 soldiers who were backing U.S. special forces and the Afghan National Army, but the MoD refused to comment on the claims. Taliban forces attacked Nad Ali, Kajaki, Musa Qala, Naw Zad, Gereshk and Garmser districts in Helmand in recent months.
Two other USA service members and an American contractor were also wounded, officials said.
Detective Lemm not only served New Yorkers as a member of this Department, but served his country as a member of the U.S. Air National Guard. Detective Lemm leaves behind a wife and two children.
In a brief statement Natoconfirmed the attack but gave no details.
In a written statement, US Defense Secretary Ash Carter offered his condolences to the families of the slain American troops. That’s compared to 140,000 foreign troops at the peak of combat operations in 2011.
The Taliban have spread their insurgency across the country this year, following the withdrawal of global combat forces at the end of 2014.
The Afghan Ministry of Interior confirmed Tuesday that British troops had arrived at Camp Shorabak, formally the U.S. Marines’ Camp Leatherneck and next door to the camp that was occupied by British forces until the worldwide combat mission ended previous year.
“The Taliban have captured the police headquarters, the governor’s office as well as the intelligence agency building in Sangin”, Mr Rasulyar told AFP.
On Monday, Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said Afghan Army commandoes and special forces had arrived in Sangin to push a counter-offensive.
The AP reports that the third person injured was an Afghan.
Helmand is a traditional stronghold of the Taliban and one of the biggest centers of opium production, which helps fund the insurgency.
The strategically important town, which was the scene of fierce fighting during the Afghan campaign, with more than 100 British troops dying in and around it, is understood to be nearly completely under Taliban control. British forces in particular saw intensive fighting there at the height of the war in 2006 and 2007. The UK has 450 troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s training mission.
His claim was supported by police in Helmand who said that security personnel had been rescued from a Taliban siege and security measures had been expanded in the area.
But there are conflicting reports as to who controls the remote district in Helmand province.
Around 65 percent of Helmand is now thought to be under Taliban control.
“In every district either we are stepping back or we are handing territory over to Taliban, but still, until now, no serious action has been taken”, he said, echoing Rasulyar’s plea to the central authorities for help.

A security official in the Bagram district gave a higher toll, saying five foreign soldiers had been killed and six others had been wounded.
