Hundreds gathered in the rain Sunday night to remember Anthony White Jr., a 19-year-old student at Winston-Salem State University who was shot and killed on campus shortly after the school completed its homecoming celebrations.
Winston Salem Police Captain Catrina Thompson told a news conference that Moore had been arrested for outstanding warrants unrelated to the shooting investigation.
Moore, a Charlotte native, attended the historically black school during the 2014-15 academic year, officials said.
A second student also was injured during the incident and was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
University Chancellor Elwood Robinson said in a Facebook post that White had been “excited and enthusiastic about his future”, and called upon the campus community to pull together and support one another over the coming weeks.
The shooting was reported at 1.20am on Sunday at a parking lot near two dormitories, placing the campus on lock down for more than three hours.
He was studying information technology and had been an accomplished football player at Belton-Honea Path High School in Honea Path, S.C., about 130 miles west of Charlotte, according to The Charlotte Observer.
The shooting came as WSSU was wrapping up its homecoming festivities.
The university has canceled public services for Sunday and will make counselors available for students.
