North Carolina speaker isn’t backing down on law

The legislation requires transgender people to use bathrooms at schools and government buildings that correspond to the sex on their birth certificates, and not how they identify themselves.

The ACC said in a statement that it is confident “every one of our 15 universities is strongly committed to these values [equality, diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination] and therefore, we will continue to host ACC Championships at campus sites”. Eight championships will be moved out of the state, including a football title game that was scheduled to be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on December 3.

New locations for the championships will be announced later, the conference says.

Of the championships stripped from North Carolina, the NCAA could look into relocating either the 2016 Women’s College Cup soccer championship (Dec. 2 and 4) or 2017 Division I women’s lacrosse championship (May 26 and 28) – or both – to Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

While it has its supporters, the law, which is being challenged in federal court, created very public blowback as a handful of entertainers boycotted the state and a few national businesses shelved planned expansions in North Carolina. Cary will lose ACC women’s soccer and and men’s and women’s tennis tournaments, and the ACC baseball tournament will be moved from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The NCAA pulled seven championship events, including a men’s basketball regional in Greensboro, from the state for the same reason Monday, citing “a commitment to fairness and inclusion”. The board issued a statement saying, “Current North Carolina state laws make it challe”.

“We agree with the NCAA’s decision”.

Sedgefield Country Club, pictured during the 2014 Wyndham Championship, will not host the 2017 ACC Women’s Golf Championship. While supporters of the bill, including Republican Gov.

Jacksonville has hosted the ACC title game before, but the NFL’s Jaguars are home that weekend so that is probably enough to squash that possibility.

Championship events that are held on the campuses of ACC universities in North Carolina will not be affected. Until North Carolina repeals House Bill 2, expect the ACC Football Championship to be in cities like Atlanta, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, Pittsburgh, or even Washington, D.C. “This is about communities in North Carolina suffering real economic blows”, Attorney General Roy Cooper, the Democratic candidate for governor, said in a videotaped statement.

The NBA moved its the All-Star game in Charlotte for the same reasons in July and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski called the law “embarrassing” in an interview with USA TODAY Sports.

GOP House Speaker Tim Moore didn’t respond to messages seeking comment, and the office of Republican Senate leader Phil Berger said he was traveling and unavailable.
