North Dakota reports first West Nile death

The LaSalle County Health Department has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in the county this year. A resident in their 70s tested positive for West Nile virus in mid-August. There are 11 total cases statewide, but no deaths are reported this year. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

In many cases, people who contract the virus experience no symptoms. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.

“People older than 60, or those who have underlying health issues are at the greatest risk of developing severe illness due to West Nile virus infection”. Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings.

Other measures that can be taken to minimize exposure to the pesky critters include removing standing water around your property fro areas such as old tires, bird baths, barrels, or other items that ay collect water.

The Montgomery County Health Department announced Thursday that Upper Merion Township would be sprayed on Tuesday September 6 to help control the adult mosquito population.

The LaSalle County Health Department would like to remind the general public to report any dead crows, blue jays, robins, or potential mosquito breeding sites to the Health Department at 815-433-3366.
