The address is also a bit of a do-over after Pence was overshadowed by Donald Trump at Saturday’s unveiling of the ticket in NY, where Pence spoke for 15 minutes, about half as long as Trump’s rambling introduction.

“Nobody gets 100 percent, so he’s batting. maybe 85”, says Curt Smith, president of the Indiana Family Institute and a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

“I say to my fellow conservatives today: it’s time for us to come together”.
In fact, improving Indiana’s roads wasn’t a priority of Pence’s until it became a liability: a monthlong traffic snarl caused when an Interstate 65 bridge was closed last August for emergency repairs.
Governor Mike Pence works right next door to IL.
“He balances Mr. Trump out in terms of personalities”, says political science professor Andrew Downs, director of the Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne.
Pence may have to use that talent for evasion in the coming campaign.
But while numerous vice presidential nominee’s statements are technically true, the context of the claims shows a more complicated picture of his handling of Indiana’s economy.
She noted that Pence’s “conservative credentials” might help Donald Trump, “who is struggling to unify the party”.
MITCHELL: But while trump was saying that, Pence had already arrived in New York City for the announcement.
“Karen Pence is a pillar of strength”, Denise Pence said Monday.
Pence said Ronald Reagan had extraordinary humility and an “unshakable faith in the capacity of the American people to achieve greatness and astound the world”.
The vice presidential nominee painted Trump as a champion of working people in the United States, of the service personnel who protect America overseas, and the law enforcement officers on the “thin blue line”.
Pence finished his speech with two clear allusions to Ronald Reagan, implying that the NY billionaire was the same kind of disruptive, outsider force as the California governor who won the presidency and became a conservative hero. “We’re going to win it all and make America great again”.
Pence has been a strong advocate of free trade, endorsing every trade agreement that’s come before him, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership specifically opposed by Trump. “Let’s resolve here and now that Hillary Clinton will never become the president of the United States of America”.
