North Korea Declines Obama’s Offer For Nuclear Negotiations, Demands Peace Treaty
North Korea could have as many as 100 nuclear bombs within five years and may already be able to mount warheads on missiles capable of reaching the United States. A few years ago, North Korea chose to walk away from the nuclear talks and has strengthened its program ever since.

Citing the United States of America outreach to Cuba and the agreement to limit Iran’s ability to build nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions, Obama said the U.S.is “prepared to engage nations with which we have had troubled histories”.
His comments came during a South Korea visit that was created to underscore close ties as South Korea also deepens relations with China. It added that the USA and South Korea would never accept North Korea as a nuclear weapons state. Beijing has more influence on Pyongyang than any other nation.
“We’re in South Korea, we’re looking at North Korea”.
The South Korean leader said that the Korean Peninsula stands at a “crossroads” because of the possibility of “strategic provocations” by North Korea in October.
The USA and South Korea had preliminary discussions in the spring about THAAD, but US and South Korean officials say it won’t be on the summit agenda this week as such a deployment hasn’t been formally proposed by Washington. The Park administration walked a tightrope between the two countries by joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as a charter member despite the Obama administration’s objections based on South Korea’s own economic interests, especially given the competitiveness of many South Korean companies in the construction sector. As China’s maritime expansion puts the US on high alert, Washington’s worries over South Korea’s ties with Beijing are becoming stronger than Seoul realizes, said a diplomatic source in the South Korean capital.
Park appears to have agreed at last to Washington’s repeated urging to improve the bilateral relations between Japan and South Korea.
“Park and Obama will discuss how to promote better dialogue with China on a path forward in reining in this hard regime”, according to an analysis by the Center for Strategic worldwide Studies (CSIS).
US retains 28,500 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War.
“No issue in which the countries concerned including the U.S. are interested can be settled unless a peace treaty is concluded before anything else”, it said in a statement released on state media.

Yet it can not be denied that the “close alliance” between the United States and South Korea has been in large part choreographed, because the heightened distrust within the United States regarding South Korea’s inclination toward China needed to be denied.
