Yonhap had reported earlier Thursday that “recent satellite imagery shows fresh activity at North Korea’s nuclear test site”.

Pyongyang has conducted a series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests since January, resulting in harsh new sanctions being implemented by the UN Security Council.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Friday it could not immediately confirm the cause, and the country’s weather agency said it was analyzing what might have happened.

The seismic event was detected near North Korea’s known nuclear test site, where it detonated its fourth nuclear device in January.

The country is banned by United Nations sanctions from any tests of nuclear or missile technology.
