South Korea’s defense ministry, in conjunction with the United States, plans to have the unique air-defense system operational by the end of 2017.

“It is certainly a major, major problem for the security and safety of our region”.

The ministry spokesman said that under that trilateral information-sharing agreement, information sharing with Japan would be possible.

China said that nothing should be done to raise tensions on the Korean peninsula, but the USA says the missile shield is in direct response to the North Korean threat. The mid-range Rodong missile was sacked from Eunyul, near the country’s south-western tip, at 7.50am.

After the meeting, Japan’s UN Ambassador Koro Bessho was heartened by the “many messages of solidarity” after his appeal to the council to be united and send a strong message to the world and especially to North Korea that its actions are “totally unacceptable”.

“They are doing all of this with a systematic, comprehensive objective of upgrading and refining their missile technologies”, he told reporters.

South Korea may change the location of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile-defense system battery. China is one of the few allies of the globally isolated North Korea.

It further stated that according to experts, THAAD will raise regional tensions rather than deter the DPRK’s nuclear and missile threats, which the South Korean government cited as a main reason for the THAAD deployment on its territory. “It is yet another flagrant violation of numerous Security Council resolutions”.

“We are once again deeply troubled by the latest test-firing of missiles by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, one of which reportedly landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone”, Stephane Dujarric told reporters, referring to North Korea by its official name.

“Our objective in this meeting is to draw attention to that fact, but also to come together to very, very clearly condemn it”, he said.
