In April, North Korea attempted unsuccessfully to launch three suspected Musudan missiles, but all exploded midair or crashed, according to South Korean defense officials.

“North Korea’s obsession with the Musudan missile derives from its desire to show off a missile program capable of striking the US”, a military official was quoted as saying by local news agency Yonhap.
North Korea launched two missiles within hours of each other, with one flying about 400km (250 miles) and reaching an altitude of 1,000km.
A man looks at a television reporting on North Korea’s missile launching in Tokyo on June 22, 2016. “The threat to Japan is intensifying”.
Haggard says nuclear weapons give North Korea’s Kim Jung Un leverage to bargain with the rest of the world.
The string of recent launch attempts shows the North is pushing hard to upgrade its missile capability in defiance of US -led worldwide pressure.
This year, North Korea has taken much interest in the Musudan, an intermediate-range missile with a strike range of 3,000 to 5,500 kilometers (1,864 to 3,417 miles).
“These provocations only serve to increase the worldwide community’s resolve to counter the DPRK’s prohibited activities, including through implementing existing UN Security Council sanctions”, Kirby said. “W?e intend to raise our concerns at the U.N.to bolster global resolve in holding (North Korea) accountable for these provocative actions”.
This is the first time in two years that North Korea has attended the six-nation forum, which is attended by representatives from the same nations that attend the six party nuclear talks, now stalled since 2008.
“It showed up in North Korea over a decade ago, and it seems to be based on a 1960s-era Soviet design with some local modifications”.
In Seoul, South Korea’s presidential office said a national security meeting would be convened later on Wednesday to discuss the latest missile launches.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that this country could “never forgive” the test.
The launches have been conducted in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions that prohibit Pyongyang from using ballistic missile technology. Pyongyang has said the country’s nuclear program is not a bargaining chip. “And it has increased tensions, not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in the region”.

“We are aware of reports that the DPRK fired two ballistic missiles”.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon Hee called Pyongyang’s move provocation towards the country.

The claimed achievements included miniaturising a nuclear warhead to fit on a missile, developing a warhead that can withstand atmospheric re-entry and building a solid-fuel missile engine.
