Though it seems doubtful that what North Korea tested was actually a full-scale hydrogen bomb, the global response has been widespread condemnation from the U.S.
But North Korea sees them as an attack on the dignity of its leader and political system, and was provoked enough the last time the South used a tactic the North calls “an open act of war”, in August, to launch an artillery strike across the border.
“That’s why I don’t think China can do anything about North Korea any more”, he said.
South Korea, which has grown increasingly close to China in recent years, also said its foreign minister would speak with his Chinese counterpart later on Friday.
A group of protesters also called for a stop to anti-North broadcasts.
“Today, in my conversation with the Chinese, I made it very clear that has not worked and we can not continue business as usual”, Kerry said.

The sound can carry 10 km (6 miles) into North Korea during the day and more than twice that at night, the South’s Yonhap news agency reported.
North Korea released new video footage of a submarine-based ballistic missile (SLBM) test on Friday but the veracity of the image is under speculation.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korea warned of war as South Korea on Saturday continued blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda across the rivals’ tense border in retaliation for the North’s purported fourth nuclear test.
But he added: “We have to be bigger than the North Koreans…”
“Congratulations North Korea!” another woman said. Despite that, North Korean defectors say South Korean music is popular in their home country, with songs and other elements of South Korea popular culture smuggled in on USB sticks and DVDs.
The broadcasts came as world powers sought to find other ways to punish the North for its widely disputed claim to have conducted its first hydrogen bomb test. South Korea’s Defense Ministry did not confirm the reports. South Korea retaliated for North Korea’s nuclear test with broadcasts of… Republican leaders of the US House of Representatives are considering a vote as soon as next week on long-delayed legislation to impose stiffer punishments on foreign companies doing business with Pyongyang, US congressional sources said on Wednesday.

“There may be a broad review of what can be done to improve security cooperation with Japan”, a senior South Korean official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters.
