North Korea’s top pop band to play in Beijing

Voice of America reported on Tuesday that although the United States is set to call for a U.N. Security Council meeting on North Korea’s human rights abuses this week, both China and Russian Federation will block any punitive resolutions. Two troupes – the State Merited Chorus and the Moranbong Band – will perform in the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing from December 12 to 14.

The band, known for their interpretive performances of the totalitarian state’s propaganda songs and Western pop music, including the “Theme from Rocky”, was formed in 2012 following an order by Kim.

Liu Yunsha, the fifth-highest ranking official in the Communist Party of China, visited Pyongyang with a delegation from Beijing to mark the event and attended the performance.

In a phone interview with KBS Thursday, a South Korean military official said there are no signs pointing to the North’s development of an H-bomb. “These North Koreans have not legal crossed the border resulting from monetary hardship of their homeland”.

North Korea is hugely dependent on China, its only major ally and the country’s largest foreign direct investor, according to the Korean Economic Institute of America.

Beijing has repeatedly said it “resolutely” opposes Pyongyang’s efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

“Whether North Korea can make nuclear weapons using tritium is unknown although we believe that it remains a technical problem North Korea still needs to solve”, ISIS said at the time. “Apparently so far China seems to think the benefit outweighs the cost”, Lee said. “In fact, it sends a signal that North Korea wants to improve relations with China”, Wang told Yonhap News Agency by telephone.

The band will perform their tightly choreographed routines over three days in “friendship performances” demonstrating the strong ties between North Korea and its supporting neighbour – a country Kim Jong-Un has yet to visit.
