North Korea satellite achieves stable orbit

The rocket launched by North Korea at the weekend seemed more powerful than its 2012 predecessor, but Pyongyang still lacks the expertise to transform it into a ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland, South Korean officials said on Tuesday. “So i think some of what we’re seeing – by North Korean standards, innovative branding and marketing of their products – is genuinely targeting Chinese consumers to see if they can get into the Chinese market”.

Park spoke by phone with Obama soon after North Korea carried out its fourth nuclear test. At that time, Obama reaffirmed the “unshakable US commitment” to South Korea’s security, and the two leaders agreed to work together to forge a united and strong global response to North Korea’s nuclear test.

He said the satellite was in an initial orbit of 498×587 kilometers – figures that denote the object’s closest and farthest distance from Earth – similar to the orbit of the satellite launched Sunday. The North, however, had not yet mastered key technology needed to turn the rocket into an intercontinental ballistic missile, the official said.
