North Korea says South’s propaganda broadcasts push situation to ‘brink of war’

Rolling bursts from walls of loudspeakers at 11 locations along the heavily militarised border, blared rhetoric critical of the Pyongyang regime, as well as “K-pop” music.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged China, the North’s only major ally and its biggest aid provider, to end “business as usual” with North Korea.

“China had a particular approach that it wanted to make, that we agreed and respected to give them space to implement that”, Kerry told reporters.

Influence: Since China controls the food and fuel lifelines to North Korea, Western analysts see Beijing holding Pyongyang’s fate in its hands.

South Korean officials said that the broadcasts can travel about 10 kilometers (6 miles) during the day, and 24 kilometers at night through the loudspeakers.

Another message said Kim’s promises to boost both the economy and the nuclear program were unrealistic. Nuclear-tipped missiles could then be used as deterrents and diplomatic bargaining chips — especially against the US, which Pyongyang has long pushed to withdraw its troops from the region and to sign a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War. The South vowed to retaliate against any attack on the equipment raised its cyber security alert and cancelled tours of the Demilitarized Zone on the border.

“The country seems to be in the stage of the ejection testing, but not in the completion stage”, South Korean military official told Yonhap news.

Responding to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s opinion that China should step up on the North Korea issue or face repercussions, Chinese newspaper Global Times carried a scathing critique: “In no way will China bear the responsibilities that the U.S., South Korea and Japan should take”.

Hua’s reference to denuclearisation is implicitly directed against the USA stationing nuclear weapons in South Korea. China provides nearly all of North Korea’s imported energy, and Chinese food goods have helped the Kim regime limit the effects of starvation and shortages.

“In Beijing, there are a lot of people who do want to change the Chinese foreign policy with regard to North Korea to take a tougher stance against Kim Jong Un, but there is no consensus to do so”, Chang said.

Without access to hard currency, North Korea couldn’t buy parts and supplies for its weapons programs, crippling its missile production line, Royce said.

Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Saturday that the United Nations seeks to broaden asset freezes and trade embargoes targeting North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test.

Another state-run newspaper published by China’s ruling Communist Party also blamed what it calls a “hostile policy” by South Korea, the United States and Japan towards North Korea for the North’s fourth nuclear test.

Ministry officials refused to elaborate about what US military assets were under consideration, but they likely refer to B-52 bombers, F-22 stealth fighters and nuclear-powered submarines.
