The ministry said two other senior officials had to undergo re-education sessions.

Kim Yong Chol and Choe are said to be in their 60s or 70s, as was Kim Yong Jin.

Jeong also said Kim Yong Chol, the head of the North’s United Front Department that handles inter-Korean relations, had been ordered to undertake “revolutionary re-education”, which usually means banishment to a rural province or other isolated area.

The official noted that leader Kim Jong Un, who took power in 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, and his consolidation of power has included purges and executions of top officials.

State news agency KCNA had announced that Jang admitted to attempting to overthrow the government and was therefore executed.

“Vice premier for education Kim Yong-jin was executed”, Seoul’s Unification Ministry spokesperson Jeong Joon-Hee said at a regular briefing.

Jeong gave no further details, including why and when his ministry believes he was executed and how it obtained the information.

Kim was branded “anti-party and a counter-revolutionary member” by the country’s State Security Department, after he exercised a “bad attitude” during North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly in June, the official said.

Kim Jong Un has allegedly had two men put to death using a method he’s been said to have used before: by anti-aircraft gun.

There have been many reports recently surrounding executions of North Korean officials.

The North Korean regime is especially paranoid in recent weeks after a senior offiicial at the London embassy defected to South Korea along with his wife and children. And Choe Hwi, a vice director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers’ Party, is now undergoing such re-education.

The 71-year-old Kim is a career military intelligence official who is believed to be the mastermind behind the North’s frequent cyberattacks on Seoul.

He was executed by firing squad in July while Mr Kim Yong Chol was re-educated at a rural farm for a month until mid-August, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said.
