North London rivals buoyed ahead of European opener

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that French champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered huge damage to their side when Zlatan Ibrahimovic departed at the end of last season, signing for Manchester United.

Southampton manager Claude Puel was disappointed his side conceded so late in the game after taking the lead in the first half.

Improvement was initially only fleeting, with Ospina racing off his line to deny Aurier before thwarting Cavani, who beat Laurent Koscielny but could not add his second with 21 minutes remaining. “Today he is an outstanding center back”.

“I have a lot of confidence in the work we’re doing”, said Emery.

Gabriel is back in full training but I don’t think he’s ready to play just yet after six weeks out with an ankle injury.

The France global suffered the blow during the dying stages of the Gunners’ 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

That said, PSG have reached the last-eight of the Champions League in each of the last four seasons and have won 10 and lost one of their last 17 home games in the competition.

Ahead of their meeting in the Champions League, PSG’s Unai Emery hailed Arsene Wenger’s longevity at Arsenal.

Wenger said: “I haven’t seen (the penalty) again, but they tell me in the dressing room it was a penalty – a 100 per cent penalty”.

The London-based club will depend heavily upon Shkodran Mustafi, who was one of the most sought after defenders this summer, now that all experienced centre-backs at the club are out for injury.

The fact that both key players started on the bench while Arsenal held Southampton 1-1 shows the Gunners have a more capable squad, which allows Wenger to rest key players when necessary.

“We played with good possibilities, we scored”. We had good spells with a good 30 minutes and we faded a little where we took our foot off the gas, but we were always in the game and looked like we were going to score. I have 24 hours.

“Perez improving? I hope so”.

Under Emery, PSG have had a hard start to the season and were involved in late drama in their weekend game as St Etienne scored in the final minute on Friday to force a 1-1 draw.
