The man had an injury to his left leg and cuts on his hands.

ABC6 will update when more information becomes available. First responders took over treatment and EMS transported Cook to a trauma center in critical condition. According to witnesses, both men were met in the water by a kayaker, who helped tow Cook to shore.

Braxton Rocha, who was attacked and severely injured by a 13-foot tiger shark off the north coast of the Big Island in September, saw the news of Friday’s attack and said it brought him back to what he went through.

Officials say witnesses told them the shark was up to 12 feet in length, but they did not know what type of shark it was.

“A lot of people stopped to help”, Baluch said. The area will be reassessed in the morning and the call will be made whether or not to keep the warning signs posted.

This is the fifth reported shark attack in Hawaii this year. On April 29, Margaret “Margo” Cruse, 65, of Kihei, was swimming off South Maui when she was fatally bitten by a shark. The surfer, Kiowa Gatewood of Kaneohe, had lacerations on his left leg that required surgery. It is not clear how far out into the ocean the victim was at the time of the incident.
