Officers said the man was bodyboarding with a friend around 400 metres away from the beach’s clubhouse when the shark struck.
He was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital where he will remain overnight.
The local man reportedly saw the shark coming before it bit him on the left thigh.
He has been taken to Port Macquarie Hospital and is expected to be flown to Sydney, according to Surf Life Saving New South Wales.
All beaches in Port Macquarie will be closed until further notice following the attack.
There wouldn’t be a formal search of the beach before it was re-opened.
Marine investigators are trying to identify the species of shark from the bite pattern and forensic examination.
Surf Life Savers Emergency Coordinator Jimmy Keogh said the decision was made due to large quantities of bait fish in the area.
A surfer has suffered life-threatening injuries after the latest in a series of shark attacks off Australia’s central east coast.

Other attacks in the northern region include surfer Craig Ison being attacked at Evans Head in July, Matthew Lee attacked at Ballina and Tadashi Nakahara, 41, killed at Ballina’s Shelley Beach in February.
