Initially, the indication was five people had been killed but RCMP Chief Supt.
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, said what unfolded in the remote native community was “every parent’s worst nightmare”.
The victims have not officially been named, however, family members say 23-year-old teacher Marie Janvier is among the dead.
He said police told him the gunman first shot two of his own siblings, before killing the teacher. She said a number of people were injured, but police have no information about how many were hurt or the type or extent of their injuries. And then I was hearing those shots, too.
Police have confirmed the shooting also affected a second location, but did not confirm reports that it may have been the suspect’s home.

Located deep in Canada’s northern boreal forest, 600 kilometers north of Saskatoon, the town of La Loche is particularly isolated and authorities had to send in police reinforcements and dispatch a medical helicopter to airlift some victims to a hospital.

La Loche community school has approximately 900 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12.
Ken Ladouceur, the division’s director of education, says he received a call from the principal of La Loche Community School shortly after 1 p.m.
Despite a high rate of gun ownership, mass shootings in Canada are infrequent, making this situation a tragic outlier.
“That student got 10 months”, Janice Wilson told the CBC of the student who tried to stab her in class. “And when he was released he was returned to the school and was put in my classroom”.
Friday’s attack will likely prove to be the worst-ever shooting at a Canadian high school.
